SpanishLessonsTitle: Spanish Lessons (Study Abroad #1)

Author: Jessica Peterson

Publication Date: January 2016

Publisher: Peterson Paperbacks, LLC

Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Goodreads Synopsis:

Along with her BFF, Maddie, Vivian hopes to indulge her inner Art History nerd by visiting the best museums in the world. She also wants to tackle more practical concerns—like a less than stellar GPA in her major, Economics—with the help of a Spanish tutor.

Madrileño Rafa Montoya is the stuff study abroad dreams are made of: super studly and super smart. He also happens to be super into Vivian. With his wicked dancing skills and his passion for the arts, he tempts her to throw caution to the wind and live out her wildest dreams.

Only problem? Maddie wants Rafa, too, and Vivian promised herself she’d never settle for second best again…not after a hookup-gone-awry last semester left her heartbroken. Is it best for Vivian to protect her heart at all costs? Or is letting Rafa in worth the risk?

This book is a New Adult contemporary romance, suitable for mature audiences.

4.75 / 5 Stars

Spanish Lessons is historical romance author Jessica Peterson’s first New Adult romance. It’s also the first book in the Study Abroad series about a group of college students finding love and themselves as they explore the culture and language of Spain. And let me just say…

Welcome to the New Adult world, Jessica Peterson!!!

The time frame throughout Spanish Lessons was perfect. I loved the way it started with Mia arriving in Spain and her frustrations with being unable to speak the language correctly and fluently. It was exactly how I imagine it would feel to arrive in a country where I didn’t speak the language well.  Then, as Mia became more comfortable with her host country, it was fun to see her blossom and even get to know herself and Spain better.

As for the romance of Spanish Lessons, it was sweet and built at a steady pace. Mia wasn’t willing to give her heart away so readily, but luckily Rafa was willing to let her take time to figure things out. When she did…Rafa treated her with sweet devotion. He brought out the best in Mia and helped her make some of the most important decisions of her life. Plus, he was super sexy!

The only part of the story that bothered me a little bit was the Mia-Rafa-Maddie love triangle. I know friends share crushes all of the time, I just didn’t like how Mia dealt with the whole situation. I was surprised how easily Maddie forgave her. I don’t think I would feel comfortable being the third wheel after everything that went down. I’m not sure it would be so easy to hang out with my crush and his girlfriend — even if she was my best friend.

Spanish Lessions was a great beginning to what is going to be a very fun New Adult series. The writing was excellent, the characters were fun and witty and the setting was beautiful. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next in book two of the Study Abroad series for Maddie!

**I received an electronic copy of Spanish Lessons from the author in exchange for an honest review.
