The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

5 / 5 Stars

This is one of those moments when I say, “What took me so long to read this book?!?!”

For months now I have seen reviews for Patrick Ness’ books all over the blogosphere. So many bloggers have written amazing reviews or told me that I needed to read his stuff. Almost every one of them told me to start with A Monster Calls. It’s a short and fast read, they told me.

I bought the illustrated version on the advice of Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts. (Great advice, Joey!) I flipped through it. The illustrations were terrifyingly beautiful. I stuck it on my shelf for another couple of months. It was the holiday season. I wasn’t ready to feel sad or afraid. I mean, a boy whose mother is deathly ill and monster? Not exactly a heartwarming tale, right?

That’s what I thought. I was wrong. While I wouldn’t say A Monster Calls made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, it was…incredibly touching. I’m not sure what the best way describe it is. Beautiful? Raw? Real? Thoughtful? Inspiring? A Monster Calls was all of those things. It was brilliant.

I’m not quite sure what else to say about it. I guess I’m still in awe of the beauty Ness created in the midst of heartache. What I will say is that I loved A Monster Calls and think it’s a book everyone should read.

Thank you to everyone that encouraged me to read A Monster Calls! You’ve created another Patrick Ness fan. 🙂 Now I can join you all in your excitement for the upcoming movie version!

  1. So glad to see you loved this one! I bought it last month but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I’m currently reading one of his other books, The Knife of Never Letting Go. Last month I read The Rest of Us Just Live Here and it was really good.
