The Sunshine Blogger Award

pablo (8)

This is tag is a mean reminder that rain has been forecasted for the entire week in not-so-sunny Seattle. 😦 It’s a bummer because we had three sunny, springlike days last week. I’m ready for more sun, less rain in my future. Anyways. Rain or shine, thank you to the lovely Arec @ Rainy Thursdays for nominating me for The Sunshine Blogger Award. So sweet of you!

 Rules for this award:

  • Answer the 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
  • Nominate some wonderful bloggers and write 11 questions for them to answer.

Arec’s Questions:

1.Disney or Dreamworks?

Both! (I can do that, right?)

2.Do you consider yourself a feminist?

According to Wikipedia, Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women.[1][2]This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women.”

I totally support the rights and equality of women, so I must be a feminist. I’m not out there campaigning for women, though. So maybe I’m not really sure how to answer this question.

3.Book adaptation or movie adaptation?

Book. Well, as long as the book comes first. If it was written after the movie, then forget it.

4.Do you do anything else while you are reading?

Sometimes I have music going or I am eating lunch/dinner or I am watching TV or reading on the treadmill. Depends on the day.

5.How often do you write review for books you haven’t actually finished?

Never. Well, unless it’s a DNF and I feel the need to say why for other readers.

6.If you can have one thing in the world, regardless of price, etc. what would it be?

Ooo! This is a hard one. The first thing that came to mind was a body like Britney Spears back in the day. Lol. But I like chocolate and tacos.

7.What do you think about women who don’t want to have children?

I think it’s great that they know themselves well enough to know having children isn’t for them. Having kids is hard. You have to devote part of yourself and your life to someone else for at least 18 years. That’s a big commitment. If someone doesn’t want to make it, then they shouldn’t be judged. There are a lot of people out there (men and women both) who have kids and shouldn’t.

Now, I have to admit I feel a little sad for people who choose not to have kids. There are a lot of rewarding things about having kids. I can’t imagine life now without my daughter. I think they’re missing out a little, but at the same time, being a mother or father isn’t for everyone.

8.Do you have an special talents?

I can tap dance.

9.Name one time where you have been scared out of you mind.

One time when my husband was in the hospital and they weren’t sure what was wrong with him. (Hereditary high blood pressure)

10.Do you believe in soulmates?

I don’t know. Maybe? I like to think you meet the right person at the right time in your life. Like, if I would have met my husband at 18 instead of 23, I’m not sure it would have worked out for either of us. (I can say that because I actually knew of him when I was in my teenage years.) And even though I dated some crappy people in my late teens and early twenties, without them and the experiences we had, I wouldn’t have been who I was when I met my husband. I think he’s the perfect person for me. So in that way, I think he’s my soulmate. I like to think we complete each other.

11.What is the one thing you cannot leave your house without (no cellphones please!)

A jacket with a hood. You never know when it’s going to rain in the Pacific Northwest and true Washingtonians don’t do umbrellas.

My Questions:

  1. What was the last book that shocked you?
  2. Favorite boy band?
  3. What song are you playing on repeat lately?
  4. What book are most anxiously waiting for?
  5. What is your favorite kind of potato chip?
  6. Who is the first person you would call after meeting your favorite author?
  7. What was the last book you read that you absolutely loved?
  8. If you could have any job, what would it be?
  9. Who is your favorite TV character?
  10. What is the last book that made you laugh out loud?
  11. Do you believe in ghosts? UFOs? Aliens?

Review: Rusty Nailed by Alice Clayton

18775203Title: Rusty Nailed

Series: Cocktail, #2

Author: Alice Clayton

Publication Date: June 24, 2014

Publisher: Gallery Books

Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance, Humor

Goodreads Synopsis:

In this sequel to Wallbanger, the second book in the Cocktail series, fan favorites Caroline and Simon negotiate the rollercoaster of their new relationship while house-sitting in San Francisco.

Playing house was never so much fun—or so confusing. With her boss on her honeymoon, Caroline’s working crazy long hours to keep the interior design company running—especially since she’s also the lead designer for the renovation of a gorgeous old hotel on Sausalito. So with her hotshot photographer boyfriend gallivanting all over the world for his job, she and Simon are heavy-duty into “absence makes the heart grow fonder” mode. Neither has any complaints about the great reunion sex, though! Then Simon decides he’s tired of so much travelling, and he’s suddenly home more. A lot more. And wanting Caroline home more, too. Though their friends’ romantic lives provide plenty of welcome distraction, eventually Caroline and Simon have to sort their relationship out. Neither wants “out of sight, out of mind,” but can they create their own happy mid-ground cliché?

3 / 5 Stars

As it states in the synopsis, Rusty Nailed is the sequel to Wallbanger. (You can find my review for Wallbanger here.) It continues from where Wallbanger left off and has the same hilarious characters.

In Rusty Nailed, Caroline and Simon are navigating their relationship. They’ve been together for a while now and things are going smoothly. Caroline is stepping up to take on more responsibilities at work from a honeymooning Jillian. Simon is off on his normal photography adventures. They’re house-sitting for Jillian and enjoying their sexy time together.

Then, after one weekend at Simon’s high school reunion, everything begins to change. Simon cuts back on traveling and convinces her to buy a house together. Caroline’s working like crazy. Everything is completely overwhelming her. Tension is starting to build up and she starts to take it out on the ones she loves the most. Simon and Caroline have to work through their problems the way all couples do.

I hate to say it, but this is probably one of those sequels I could have done without. I love Caroline, Simon and all of their friends. I just didn’t feel like this story did them justice. There were still a lot of funny and sexy moments, but they were overshadowed by Caroline’s stress.

Caroline’s stress with her job, Simon and her friends took center stage in Rusty Nailed. She was always on the edge, so close to blowing up. It kind of stressed me out reading it! I mean, she has so many amazing things in her life and all she wanted to do was complain. I wanted to go back to the fun of Wallbanger. Things did look up at the end, but I wish the entire book would have been a little less stressful.

Would I suggest reading Rusty Nailed? If you loved Wallbanger, it’s worth giving a shot. It was fun seeing what was going on with everyone. And it did introduce me to a new character, Viv,  who will be the main character in the next book in the series. I’m really looking forward to reading her story. She seems like a lot of fun.

Review: Wallbanger by Alice Clayton

15858248Title: Wallbanger

Series: Cocktail, #1

Author: Alice Clayton

Publication Date: November 27, 2012

Publisher: Omnific Publishing

Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance, Humor

Goodreads Synopsis:

The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she’s gaining an intimate knowledge of her new neighbor’s nocturnal adventures. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed dating hiatus, and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. The tension between them is as thick as the walls are thin, and the results just as mixed. Suddenly, Caroline is finding she may have discovered a whole new definition of neighborly…

In a delicious mix of silly and steamy, Alice Clayton dishes out a hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight…

5 / 5 Stars

Oh my goodness. How to describe this delightful book? Hilarious is the first word that comes to mind. Sexy is the second. Add in a little bit of sweet and that basically sums up the entire book. It was perfect.

When independent Caroline moved into her new apartment, she never imagined she was going to be awoken in the middle of every night. Her new neighbor, Simon, has all sorts of extracurricular activities going on in the wee hours. Unluckily for Caroline, the walls are paper-thin. She’s stuck not only listening to Simon’s sexual escapades with different women, but feeling them when his bed slams against her wall. It’s driving her crazy! She just wants to sleep and ignore the fact that it’s been forever since she had a big “O” of her own.

When Caroline can’t stand it anymore, she confronts Simon. What starts out as a hatred between the two quickly turns into a friendship–a friendship with a ton of sexual sparks. As hard as they try to keep their relationship in the friend zone, they can’t deny their attraction to each other.

Wallbanger was filled with hilarious sexual innuendos, just as funny situations and cool characters. It made me laugh so many times. I would highly suggest it if you’re looking for a contemporary New Adult novel to make you laugh.

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

http___www.pixteller.com_pdata_t_l-318719

I was tagged by Melissa @ In a Bookish World to complete the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag. I think I’ve done this one before, but it’s been a while so I thought I would do it again. Maybe my answers have changed. 😉 Thank you, Melissa!

 1. A popular book or series you didn’t like.

13528340

Well, I can’t say I hated it. I loved it until about 2/3 of the way through and then I hated it. I didn’t read the rest of the series after that.

2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

17788401

Okay, so not everyone hates this book, but there are just as many people that hate it as there are that love it. I’m in the love category, obviously.

3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn people for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like.

69363821

(Is it just me that sings OPP by Naughty By Nature every time I see OTP? I’m weird, I know.)

OTP: Get ready to boo me. I didn’t like Anna and Étienne St. Clair. No matter how unhappy the dude was, HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND. Ugh. It just ruined it for me.

4. A popular genre that you hardly reach for.

Again, get ready to boo. Fantasy. I’ve liked the ones I’ve read that were recommended to me, but it’s not a genre I gravitate towards.

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

10507293

America. She was okay in The Selection, but I wanted to knock her upside the head in the 43 pages I read of The Elite. Yet another popular series I didn’t finish.

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

22557272

Sorry, Paula Hawkins. The hype around The Girl on the Train ruined it and possibly your future books for me. We’ll see…

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s popular, but I truly dislike the whole student-teacher relationship trope. I know I’ve said it before, but some boundaries shouldn’t not be crossed. This is one. Maybe it’s because I’m parent now, but I have to trust teachers. No way I want my daughter pursuing/being pursued by a teacher. I don’t care if she’s an eighteen-year-old high school senior and he’s twenty-three. Boundaries!

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

18660669

I think I read my vampire quotient when I finished reading The Twilight Saga.

(BTW, I was double checking the meaning of quotient to make sure I was using the right word and this example sentenced popped up: And since the WTF quotient is so very low, some see it as, well, masturbatory.”  Um…huh? I wonder who they let write that definition sentence? Kind of scandalous, if you ask me. 😉 )

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

6101718

I’m digging Syfy’s version of The Magicians more than I remember enjoying the book. Not that I didn’t think the book was good, I just like the way they’re bringing it to life. (And I do have to admit I never read past book 1.)

There you have it, my unpopular opinions. Hopefully, I didn’t offend anyone.

I’m going to tag the following people. Feel free to ignore if you’ve already done the tag or aren’t interested in it.

Release Day Blast & Review: His to Guard by Elizabeth Reyes

htg-release

We’re so excited to be celebrating the release of Elizabeth Reyes’ HIS TO GUARD – Isaiah’s story is finally here! Fall in love with the forbidden in HIS TO GUARD, available now!

HisToGuardFinalAbout HIS TO GUARD

Even if you’ve given up, it doesn’t mean your heart ever does.

With her life in danger, Raquel Santana had just begun to blend into the sleepy little town she’d escaped to, to start over. Now her father’s non-negotiable plan to protect her could ruin everything. After adamantly refusing to have someone watch over her, she finally relents.

Only nothing can prepare her for who arrives at her doorstep.

Finding out the beautiful woman Isaiah Romero is assigned to guard is someone he has a sizzling past with—someone he’s never been able to forget—should’ve been a good thing. But when that woman is someone who a)he’d never trust with his heart again and b)completely off limits to him forever now, his loyalties are tested.

When the forbidden becomes His to Guard . . .restraint becomes a torment.

Despite the attraction he’s surprised he still feels for her and the inevitable sexual tension he knows he’ll have to endure, Isaiah is adamant about one thing: even unwritten rules should never be broken—until they are.

Author’s note: Welcome to the Fate series! Each book in the bestselling series is a stand-alone love story following a new couple. There is no need to read the others to keep up with any of the stories. But you’ll enjoy reading each title and seeing familiar faces make appearances.

Get a Peek at HIS TO GUARD

Isaiah wasn’t even all the way down the back door steps when he nearly gave himself whiplash doing a double take. For a moment, he had the insane idea that maybe he’d done so much thinking of Kelli in the last month he was beginning to see her face where it wasn’t. It couldn’t be her. Why would she be here? He peered at her, still not a hundred percent sure it was her. Then she smiled as she said something to his sister Emi, who she was sitting next to. It was definitely her and his heartbeat sped up. He’d never forget that smile. It almost made him smile as well, but he still felt too stunned.

Was it possible she was a friend of Emi’s? Or was Kelli here for him? Other possibilities raced through his mind as he took a couple more steps down the porch into his uncle’s backyard, where family and friends were gathered. She sat there continuing her chat with his sister. Just like everyone else in attendance, she appeared as laid back without a care in the world. Then their eyes met and locked, and her sitting up straight with a jolt said it all. She hadn’t come here for him. Kelli was as stunned to see him here as he was to see her.

“Sai,” Nathan said breaking Isaiah from his thoughts. “I was beginning to wonder where you were.”

Isaiah glanced at him, taking the beer Nathan handed him. Before he could ask about Kelli, his brother smiled big, turning in her direction. “Check this out.” He started in Kelli’s direction. “There’s someone here I want you to meet.”

Isaiah followed him as the wheels in his head spun wildly. The tiniest of hopes that maybe she was there for him were squashed the moment their eyes had met. Kelli still hadn’t taken her eyes off him and Isaiah could feel in his gut this wasn’t going to be a happy reunion. He turned to his brother, who was smiling a bit too big, even as he brought his beer bottle to his lips. That’s when he noticed it. The twinkle in his brother’s eyes and how overdressed he was for Manny’s backyard shindig. It felt almost as if things slowed and they were walking in slow motion as he turned to back to Kelli. She, too, was a bit overdressed for a backyard gathering. Were they on a date?

Overwhelmed with panic, Isaiah gulped. He felt too dazed to come up with even a single excuse why he might need to make a mad dash back into his uncles’ house and back out the front door so he could get the hell out of there. More than anything the pain was back and it was even more brutal now.

Emi, who still sat with Kelli, leaned in and said something, motioning in Isaiah and Nathan’s direction. Kelli’s eyes widened in what appeared to be the same horror Isaiah was feeling. Emi very likely had just let Kelli in on who he was—Nathan’s brother. Obviously, she hadn’t had a clue whose brother she was now dating. Was it possible she might’ve been seeing Nathan before the weekend she spent with Isaiah just last month? Was that why, even after the unexpected amazing connection Isaiah thought they’d had, she’d blown him off like she had?

Nathan rarely brought girls to meet the family, let alone small intimate gatherings like this one where even more extended family would be . . . unless he was finally serious about one. Fuck.

What felt like the longest walk of his life finally came to an end when they reached her. Like a deer caught in headlights, Kelli continued to stare at him, appearing completely stunned.

“Sai,” Nathan said with that same twinkle in his eye. “This is my girl, Kelli Santana.”

ARC Review

4 / 5 Stars

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Elizabeth Reyes’ novels, she is the author of several great romance series. His to Guard is the sixth book in the Fate series. The Fate series is a spin-off of The Moreno Brothers series. You don’t have to read the rest of these series prior to reading His to Guard, but there are some characters and situations from the previous books.

In His to Guard, Isaiah Romero meets Kelli in a bar. After an amazing weekend together, they go their separate ways. All Isaiah has of Kelli from that weekend are steamy memories and her phone number. Too bad she won’t answer his texts.

Then, out of nowhere, Isaiah runs into Kelli…at his family function…as his brother Nathan’s date. (This isn’t really spoiler-ish. It’s mentioned in book 5, Rage.) Isaiah is devastated. He thought they shared a connection, but he won’t have anything to do with his brother’s woman. Luckily, Kelli soon moves and Isaiah never has to see her again.

Until he shows up for his new private security job protecting “Raquel”. As hard as he tries, Isaiah can’t avoid his feelings for Kelli.

I hate saying this because I love Elizabeth Reyes’ writing, but His to Guard started out a little rocky for me. It just didn’t flow well in the first chapter. I even went back and reread it after finishing the book to see if it was just me. It wasn’t. Luckily, it was just the first chapter that felt that way. The rest of the story flowed smoothly.

Once I got past the first chapter, I really enjoyed His to Guard. Isaiah was one of Reyes’ typical macho, jealous, overly protective heroes. He definitely made me swoon. Kelli was harder to read. She was a strong, intelligent woman, but I was almost as confused as Isaiah was over whether she was a liar or not. It was fun to be a little suspicious of her.

My favorite thing about His to Guard was getting to go back to scenes in Rage that were from A.J.’s view point Nathan, Kelli and Isaiah and find out what really happened. It added so much more to the story and it set up what was to come perfectly!

I don’t want to give too much away, but the only part of the story I didn’t care for was what happened to Isaiah toward the end of the story. It surprised me after what went on earlier in the book with his firefighter job. It just seemed like a lot to happen to one person in a book. I liked how it set up the ending (Which was PERFECT, by the way!), though.

Overall, I truly enjoyed being back in the Romero family’s world. His to Guard was a solid addition to the family. I would highly recommend any of The Moreno Brothers or the Fate series book to New Adult contemporary romance readers. I can’t wait to find out what is in store next for Isaiah’s brother, Nathan, in Uninvited!

**I received an electronic ARC of His to Guard from the author in exchange for an honest review.
